biography

 
  1. 1948: Born Williamstown, Victoria, Australia

  2. 1962: Bought first record - EP of The Shadows




  1. 1963: Bought first guitar after being introduced to music of Muddy Waters, Ray Charles and

  2. Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee by 

  3. mother of high school friend.

 





  1. 1964: Forms Adderley Smith Blues Band and becomes enmeshed in Melbourne blues scene meeting at Tony Standish’s record shop in Little La Trobe Street with other enthusiasts such as Ross Wilson, Keith Glass, Chris Stockley, David Pepperell,etc.

  2. Broderick Smith joins Adderley Smith.

1968: Drafted into the army

  1. 1971: Joins SUNDOWN with Keith Glass, Broderick

  2. and Mark Barnes and gets involved with country music.

  1. 1972: Moves to Sydney and joins GREG QUILL’S COUNTRY RADIO playing guitar, mandolin and steel guitar…starts writing songs with Greg Quill……GYPSY QUEEN and WINTERSONG……Gypsy Queen goes to No. 12 on the national charts and wins ARIA award for best song 1972.

 
  1. 1973:  Moves back to Melbourne and forms THE DINGOES with

  2. Broderick Smith and Chris Stockley and contributes most of

  3. the songs including WAY OUT WEST.


 

1976:  The Dingoes are signed to A & M in the USA and are managed by  Peter Rudge of The Rolling Stones and Lynyrd Skynyrd.  They record FIVE TIMES THE SUN in San Francisco with Elliot Mazer producing.  Extensive touring throughout the US follows.


1980: The Dingoes disband after recording ORPHANS OF THE STORM in NYC.


1980’s:   Divides time between NY and Australia playing with Richard Clapton, writing international top ten hit MAN ON YOUR MIND with Glenn Shorrock for the Little River Band. Works as staff writer for Chrysalis Music in NY and does session work in NY including hit album NIGHT OUT for Ellen Foley (with Mick Ronson and Ian Hunter.





Records ALL FIRED UP with his band RATTLING SABRES featuring Robert Price on vocals.  Song is covered by PAT BENATAR and goes top ten around the world.

 

1990’s:  Composes film score for NY based DiCerto Bros movie, NO EXIT.


Forms band Locomo and plays regularly around NYC.


Way Out West is covered by James Reyne and James Blundell and goes top ten in Australia. The song wins APRA Award for Best Country Song 1993.


Moves into producing records for THE BLACK SORROWS, CYNDI BOSTE, JEFF LANG, PAUL KELLY, GOANNA, THE PIGRAM BROTHERS, RUSSELL CROWE, BRUCE HENDERSON, CHRIS WILSON and others.


2000’s:  Reunites with GREG QUILL to co-write and produce album, SO RUDELY INTERRUPTED.


..and more production including major album for R&B great JIMMY NORMAN…… his album, LITTLE PIECES wins best independent blues album USA 2005.


Subsequently performs with Jimmy at THE APOLLO in Harlem and CARNEGIE HALL.

2005: Returns to Australia to produce LAWSON, featuring songs written by JOHN SCHUMANN to HENRY LAWSON’S poetry.


2006: Performs in numerous concerts as part of THE NEW YORK GUITAR FESTIVAL including NEBRASKA tribute with BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN and others at THE WINTERGARDEN and Lincoln Centre in NYC.
